I just read a great article about dog cancer and omega 6 fatty acid. Dr. Demian Dressler is also known as the “dog cancer vet” and wrote an article over at sciencedaily.com indicating that we should seriously limit foods for both people and pets containing ingredients that are high in omega 6′s. Too much omega 6 fatty acids for dogs causes inflammation which leads to an atmosphere within the body that is favorable to cancer.
Foods High In Omega 6 Fatty Acids
Grain fed red meat (especially organ meats), corn oil and vegetable oil are all very high in omega 6 fatty acid. Here are other foods and oils that are also heavy in omega 6:
- Safflower oil
- Sesame oil
- Sunflower oil
- Peanut oil
- Soybean
- Cottonseed
- Egg yolks
- Farm raised Tilapia fish
According to the article, the number of dog deaths due to cancer would decrease significantly if dog owners would reduce and limit the amount of omega 6 fatty acids in their dog’s daily diet. Actually, the article indicates that the number of deaths would be reduced in both people and dogs simply by decreasing omega 6 intake.
Reduce Calories Especially From Sugar
If your dog is obese or overweight; when it comes to canine cancer treatment or prevention, it’s very important to cut the calories especially from sugar. If your dog is eating a dog food that contains sweeteners (I hope not), then you really should start looking for a better food. Typically, foods that contain sugars and sweeteners are poor quality dog foods and sweeteners are only added for one reason and that is to attract your dog to eat it.
Sweeteners pack on the calories and can also cause problems with diabetes. Dog cancer cells thrive on sugar and it also encourages the growth of tumors. If your dog’s food contains the following ingredients – I highly recommend researching a better food for your furry family member:
- Corn syrup (any form)
- Cane molasses
- Sugar
- Sucrose
- Sorbitol
- Fructose
- Glucose
- Propylene glycol
- Ammoniated glycyrrhizin
Whether it’s a human or canine body, too much omega 6 and not enough omega 3 can deliver bad results.

Hey, this is one of the best posts that I’ve ever seen; you may include some more ideas in the same theme. I’m still waiting for some interesting thoughts from your side in your next post. From past few days, my dog is not eating well. My dog feeling very Difficulty in eating. It was loosing too much weight. I have read in one site, these are main symptoms of dog cancer. Do you think my dog is suffering with cancer? What do I have to do now?
Hi Rosie:
Thank you so much for your very kind words. The first thing that you need to do is get your dog to a vet if possible. Does your dog have any type of tumors, lesions or swelling anywhere? How old is your dog? Does he have bad breath and what kind of condition are his teeth in? Are they brown, broken, etc.? Do you brush them or care for his teeth at all? Is he still losing weight? What breed or mix of dog is he?
Yes, hurry, get to a vet. My dog was just operated on Mast-cell-cancer, even than she lost a lot of weight, but I could see the bumps.
Please, Rosi, dont wait, it will cost you more because it is getting worse everyday faster. Hurry, hurry, good luck to your loved one.
